For expectant or newly-minted parents, knowing a little about the features and characteristics of crib bedding sets can help when it comes time to start populating the baby's nursery with the right kinds of items. Sets can be extremely simple and with only a few items or they can be fairly complex, with quite a few items that costs a relatively large amount of money.

Usually, most people who have children that sleeping cribs prefer specific sheet sets that fit crib mattresses, though other parents just grab a regular sheet set and tuck the excess under the mattress. If going with a real crib set, understand that they range from extremely basic up to very full-featured and in many different, colors, styles and pieces.

Of course, the more numerous the pieces are within a set the more expensive it tends to be. Contributing factors, besides piece count, also include the quality of the materials contained within the set and any special themes — such as popular animal or cartoon figures — that the set displays. As an example, Disney-related sets are always more expensive than plain sets.

Basic bedding sets are usually made up of three separate pieces, a dust ruffle, a crib sheet and a baby blanket. Other sets can be extremely detailed and include things like window coverings, crib bumpers, diaper organizers and wall decorations, to name just a few items that can be had.

Most newly-minted parents (and especially mothers) usually use crib sets as a way to come up with a durable theme for the baby's room or nursery. And even though adult fashion changes greatly, it's still the case that certain baby fashions are timeless, as they have been for decades. Classic patterns and softer colors or sets with cartoon figures continue to be extremely popular.

The two most important pieces when it comes to a bedding set tend to be the sheets and the baby blanket. It's always advisable to spend a little extra to get durable fabrics, especially when it comes to the blanket. After all, that piece could end up becoming little baby's lifelong companion, so to speak. It should be able to resist the effects of hundreds of washings, in other words.

Looking at the characteristics of various crib bedding sets reveals a way for new or expectant parents to begin designing the baby's room around such sets. In general, these bedding sets tend to be more long-lasting in terms of their themes, too. They also come in a wide range of prices, depending on piece count and the durability of the fabrics and their construction.
