Introduction
Did you know that the sago is not a palm at all? Yet we call it sago palm. It is in fact a cycad which is a different family. Well cycad or palm, doesn't really matter much, what actually matters is that it is one of the most beautiful plants on this earth, isn't it? And it has been on earth for over a 200 million years and thus a living fossil. Let me tell you some more information on one of my favorite plants, read below.
Propagation
The sago palms can be propagated by seed OR by removal of basal offsets.
Seeds can take about three months to germinate under normal conditions.
If propagating by offsets or suckers, let them grow 10 cm to 15 cm in diameter before removing them from the mother plant. Do not damage or scare the mother plant while removing them.
Care
Caring for this amazing palm tree is somewhat easy. You just need to sort out a few basic things.
Place/plant it in full sunshine. However leaves of the younger plants might get burnt due to the direct sunlight.
They grow the best when planted in ground instead of pots.
Allow the soil to dry before watering it again.
Prune lower leaves to encourage new growth.
Plant it in sandy, well drained soil.
They prefer warmer temperatures and are cold tolerant to 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
