Pendant lights are a great way to add a spark of light to your home, whether they're inside or out. A small addition of pendant lighting can make a big difference in the appearance of the room. Pendant lights come in many different styles, from contemporary to traditional styles. Of course, the type of lighting fixture you choose is just a matter of preference.

If your house is modern, you'll probably end up with a beautiful stainless steel or brass finished pendant. I've seen some incredible contemporary designs, specifically the way the glass or steel is cut.

If you're looking for a more traditional feel, then you'll probably be interested in Tiffany-style pendant lights. This style is made with stained glass and is usually extremely decorative. The pop of color from Tiffany lights can really make a difference in the style of the room they're placed in.

Pendant lights can be placed in a wide-variety of places throughout the home. They can also add a beautiful touch outside the home at your front door. I'll discuss some common places to install these lights throughout this article.

They're most commonly found in the kitchen over the kitchen table or hanging over the breakfast bar. Island style pendants are very common for a kitchen. This is when more than one light will hang from a center piece in a symmetrical way.

They're also found in the game room, perhaps over a billiards table. If they're over a gaming table, they can hang a bit lower than in a kitchen. Same as if installed at a work space. You want enough light from the pendants so they should be installed closer to the table.

If you're thinking about hanging these lights above a table or counter, the general rule is to make sure they're hanging at least 30″ – 40″ above the surface. Before you're final installation, make sure you test the height out. If someone's sitting down at the table, it should never get in their way.
