Paintings are costly belongings of a house. So you should take good care of them in a proper way. Your paintings will not face any serious damage until they are hung on a wall. But if you do not pack your paintings properly during a move, serious damage can be faced by them.

With time, paintings become more delicate. So, if they are harmed, they cannot be replaced. Packing the paintings properly lowers the risk of any serious damage. This is the reason antique works of art should be packed and handled with great care by you at the time of moving.

Here is a list of some of the essential items that will be required by you to pack your paintings properly.

  • Bubble wrap
  • Stiff cardboard
  • String
  • Non-acidic plastic wrap/Glassine/packing paper
  • Styrofoam
  • Cardboard glass box
  • Packing tape
  • Styrofoam peanuts

Some of the steps of packing your paintings are given below:

  • Firstly, you have to remove the painting very carefully from the wall. The canvas from the frame should not be removed by you. You have to pack the painting in its original form. A clean and dry soft cloth must be used to clean the painting up a bit.
  • The painting should be wrapped in non-acidic plastic wrap. Acidic content is contained by some bubble wraps and plastic wraps because reactions may take place which can in turn ruin your antique paintings. Glassine or packing paper can also be used instead of non-acidic plastic wrap. Glassine is usually a large sized material which is mostly as same as wax paper. You can easily buy it from any store.
  • Next, two sheets of stiff cardboards will be needed by you for covering both the back and front sides of the painting. By doing this, your painting will be saved from any damage at the time of packing or unpacking.
  • Fairly thick L-shaped pieces have to be cut from the Styrofoam sheet for the protection of the corners. A heated knife should be used to carry out this cutting process. Cut the pieces properly so that they can fit at the corners of the paintings.
  • Now the whole painting has to be wrapped by using a bubble wrap. Wrap the painting twice with the bubble wrap for extra protection.

Thus, follow these above given steps to protect your paintings from any kind of damage during your move. Make sure to keep your paintings in the lower area of the truck and do not keep anything above it.
