In ancient times and even now in some countries people sleep on the floor. In ancient times they would make a bed using animal skins and animal wool to make blankets, they would also make beds from wood and reed matting, these beds were also used as a place to eat and sit on when entertaining.

Wooden beds have been a favorite and always will be because they have that natural feel and look. Wood is also easy to use in design and manufacture, even with the most basic tools wood has always been carved and styled from a great many products and ornaments.

The basic bed has always been a choice for families even when very poor. The parent could usually obtain suitable wood from the forest and construct suitable beds. Having a wooden bed allowed the person to sleep off the floor helping to overcome the discomfort of lying on a cold floor.

Wooden beds developed mostly over many years with the most elaborate four poster beds used by the Royals and Noblemen of the past. These beds were made with beautiful carvings with luxurious drapes and curtains. These drapes and curtains were drawn round the four posts to keep out the drafts and keep the bed warm. Modern day has seen the wooden bed develop into much more simple style, although there are still opportunities to obtain four poster beds.

The modern beds of wooden is made from various types of wood from pine to the much harder woods such as oak. The pine beds are generally much cheaper as the wood is much easier to work with and also much more available. Oak and other hardwood beds are generally more expensive but give a much better bed and will last a great deal longer.

Wooden beds have the great advantage of fitting into most decors in a bedroom as natural wood lends itself to all colors and styles.

When choosing a wooden bed always look for a bed head that has a natural grain in the wood as this will enhance the look of the whole bedroom.
